Those Magical Blue Somalis

It all started with April…

Well, no — of course, it really started with her mother, Astra (Somalissa Stella).

Like many Somali breeders, we started with the classic colors — ruddy and sorrel. We loved them then, and we still love them just as much today. But at some point Astra came into our lives and completely enchanted us with her blue magic.

With her, a new chapter began at Foxholm.

Today, it is no secret that an important part of our breeding program is focused on blue Somalis.

Over the years, we have also received a remarkable number of enquiries specifically about blue Somali kittens. Interestingly, many of them have come from people in creative professions — artists, designers and photographers — or from people whose hobbies involve a particularly strong visual sense. Perhaps there really is something about this color that speaks especially strongly to people with an eye for beauty.

Because there is something almost magical about a beautiful blue Somali.

Foxholm April

When Astra gave birth to April, it quickly became clear that we simply couldn’t let this girl go.

We took her to her first cat show when she was still very young — only five months old. And there, something happened that every breeder hopes for: April became Best in Show.

But the next day brought an even bigger surprise.

She won Supreme Best, becoming the winner among the show’s winners.

For us, it was an unforgettable moment. So many years of breeding, planning, hopes, doubts and small steps forward — and suddenly, this.

Finally!

Our Blue Somali Breeding Program

April’s success made us even more certain that blue Somalis were a direction we wanted to develop further.

Our goal is not simply to produce the blue color. We are working to improve type while striving for a beautiful warm undercoat, depth of color and strong ticking contrast — while preserving everything we love about the Somali: balance, elegance and that unmistakable Somali expression.

If you would like to learn more about the blue Somali color, its genetics and what makes these cats so special, you can read more on our dedicated Blue Somali Cats page.

Today, Foxholm April herself is part of our breeding program, together with her daughter Foxholm Baby Blue, who has already won Best Junior at a show, and our blue Somali male Makeda´s Elwood of Foxholm.

And we are even considering bringing back the girl who started it all — Astra.

This time, of course, in the neuter class. She has been retired from breeding for a long time and now enjoys her life with us as a much-loved, happy neutered lady. But perhaps her show career isn’t quite over yet.

Blue somali kittens

And this year has been especially kind to us: four blue kittens have already been born at Foxholm.

Beautiful Foxholm Heidi and her three little blue cousins — three Somali boys.

Their mothers are sisters: Foxholm Liv, a ruddy Somali, and Foxholm Lucy, a fawn.

They grew up together, and this summer they became mothers almost at the same time. Now they are raising all the kittens together, without the slightest distinction between “mine” and “yours”.

Shortly before the kittens were born, we wrote about these two beautiful sisters and how they were preparing for motherhood almost side by side. You can read their story here:

Two Beautiful Sisters, One Exciting Week Ahead

And when we look at this little blue family today, it is impossible not to think of Astra.

One blue Somali girl came into our lives and changed the direction of our breeding program.

Then came April. Then Baby Blue. And now another generation of little blue Somalis is growing up at Foxholm.

And somehow, after all these years, that blue magic still feels just as magical.

Because this is where our blue story began. 💙
